Wow. This story was compelling and complex. Simons' writing was superb. She had me right there. I loved reading about the history of the war from the Russian pov. I felt like I was in Leningrad during WWII watching Tatiana and Alexander fall in love through secrecy, through poverty, through starvation, through people trying to keep them apart. Their love was the one bright spot while their world was crumbling around them.

Tatiana was an amazing heroine. She was a slip of a girl, just seventeen years old. Yet she was strong, and generous, and clever, and brave, and always an optimist while her family was anything but. She just kicked butt all the way to the end. She's a survivor and I loved her.

Alexander is a Russian officer. He's courageous, and complicated, and hot-headed, and he loves Tatiana fiercely. But they definitely have obstacles. A major one being Dimitri. He is now up there with Joffrey Baratheon and Black Jack Randall as the most vile human beings in fiction.

My only complaint about this book is the monotony. I felt there were a number of scenes where the author droned on and on. I wanted her to move on. It could have been much shorter. Otherwise, I thought it was perfect. I'm looking forward to diving in to book two.

Bronze Horseman Paullina Simons Books Reviews

I never write reviews, for anything really. I just don't have time. But I'm carving out a few minutes in the interest of saving someone else HOURS of their life that they'll never get back trying to slog through this monstrosity. I'm not sure I've ever disliked a book as much as I disliked this one. I love a big fat historical fiction, but I wanted to pitch this one against the wall several times. The characters are so vile and unlikeable and ridiculous. They make life so much more difficult than it has to be, they're immature and argumentative at every turn. I hated them. Some will say Alexander is a romantic hero...he's a douchebag. And Tatiana is a pathetic weakling for falling for him. Their story drags on and on and ON, Good Lord. For the first 75% of the book the same.exact thing happens every single day - people are starving, the city gets bombed, and Tatiana's family treats her like garbage. Then, whoa, about face, suddenly you're in a badly written cheap romance novel where the exact same thing happens every day, except now the thing happening is ludicrous sex scenes involving licking ice cream off each other. Don't. Just don't. I couldn't even finish this one. If you're in the mood for an epic Russian love story, read Anna Karenina instead, it's a masterpiece and there's plenty of banging. Unlike this book, which just made me want to bang my head against the wall.
Over my lifetime I have only read a handful of books as gripping as "The Bronze Horseman." The story is unforgettable and I still get goosebumps when I think about it - a truly powerful story with all the sighs, gasps, tears, and terror of a great classic. I read the series about five years ago, back when I wasn't in the habit of leaving reviews on . Someone recently asked me my favorite books and I realized the Bronze Horseman was in my top five, which is saying something because I am a very avid reader. I realized I must leave a review.

To other reviewers who said this book starts slow, I say this Be patient. This is an epic romance. The story builds and builds until you're on the edge of your seat. I'm quite sure I bit off some fingernails while I was reading it. I know I lost some sleep. I couldn't stop turning the pages, reading all night and all day, completely enthralled. This is a great love story, and yes, it is long, and I love that it is long. It isn't formula romance, it is life and death situations, struggling to survive in times of great historic proportions, a hero who is truly a hero in every sense of the word, a very young heroine who grows and becomes of woman of great courage and strength.

I think there should be a special rating on for books of this caliber. Five stars does not do it justice. This book stands out as one of the greats that endures the tests of time.
The Bronze Horseman is a love story- not to be confused with a romance book. It is about an all-consuming love that you have to be willing to fight for against the worst odds.

I went from hating Alexander to loving him back to hating him and then falling in love with him forever. I also grew to respect Tatiana because that girl fought hard and proved everyone wrong. This is not a story about insta love and lust. This is a slow burn of hopes and dreams. It is a story that honestly could have taken place and that in itself rips my heart out every single time Alexander and Tatiana have to fight for each other and survival. Being set during WWII makes this story a reminder that real people lived through horrible situations and died by the hundreds and thousands.

I wish I could just give you everything in my head so you could understand the obsession with this book but of all the books I want you to go blind into this one is the absolute most important! It packs a punch when you don't know what to expect, but if you have read it or do end up reading it feel free to contact me because I will talk about that books for hours and never be bored!

I would give that book 5 stars but a million feels more appropriate so I am rating it 1 million stars! Read it so we can talk about it! I will be here when you need someone to vent to!
OH MY GOODNESS! I devoured TBH in 3 days. My kids and husband lived off poptarts and cereal for this book. TBH is gut wrenching and heart breaking with a war and history as the back drop. I sent passages of this book to my husband at work just so he would get an idea of what was taking over my life. It even helped us talk more about WWII (one of his many favorite subjects), while I was crying over T & A going hungry during war torn Russia. I ordered the next 2 books and I'm hoping that I can balance it with my every day life. It will be a tough go, but someone will have to do it.
I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of the Outlander series.
