I never bought this book. I asked about it because I was interested in a different book with the same title. Apparently, somehow I ended up talking to the author. He became offensive and made disrespectful comments when he realized what I was really looking for. Therefore I gave the book one star.

Do as I Say Not as I Do Frederick James Preston 9780975544402 Books Reviews

This is an excellent first novel from Mr. Preston. He tells the story of January Calhoun and how circumstances in life can cause an intelligent young man to make the wrong decisions for his life. I enjoyed the characters and how we were able to see how they became the people they are. This is a good book for high schoolers to read. For adults it lets us know how important parents can be in guiding their children. My book club SILK (Sisters Increasing Literary Knowledge) really enjoyed this book and are looking forward to a movie based on it and a hopefully a sequel later.
Do As I Say, Not As I Do is a must read! Mr. Preston is a prolific writer with an amazing talent. His use of words boasts of a skilled word smith perfecting his craft. The story was descriptive and believable as the characters all came to life with their own distinct voices. Insight into a world many speak about, but few live to tell. A fast paced journey into the lives of those on the edge. This is a definite page turner. I look forward to more great works from Mr. Preston as his debut novel secures his place in this literary game showing that he can hold his own!
My book club, "Spirit III", based out of Atlanta, Ga really enjoyed reading this novel. The antisipation of January's next move allowed the book to be an easy read. Once you get started, it's hard to put down. The author is very intelligent and has a keen sense of writing. We had the pleasure of having Frederick J.Preston, at one of our meetings. The are so many young men in the world that are striving to do the right thing, but sometimes this is a hard task for them without proper guidance. Mr. Preston, "broke it down"... Do AS I SAY NOT AS I DO. Read the novel and you'll understand just what point the author is making. I'd also recommend this novel to "rising" 9th grade young men.
This book is sooooooooooooooo good. It talks about the things that are really going on in society that people fail to realize. About how generation after generation people are recycling hate and crime; especially in the black communities. It can definitely help individuals who are simple or simply in denial of what's going on around them in their child's schools and in their neighborhoods, open their eyes and open their minds. Too many bright, intelligent kids are wasting their lives due to drugs and violence and sex. Instead of bettering themselves and advancing themselves academically, which they have all the power to do, they are following in their role model's footsteps and molding themselves to be failures. This book can really help parents to realize that their offspring look up to them and look at the things they do as examples of how they should carry their lives out. Children can't be expected to practice right from wrong when they don't see it being practiced by the individuals that they look up to. Positive things have to be instilled in the youth at an early age when their minds are like sponges. They can only practice and take on to the things that they observe people they know doing it because it's the only thing they know or want to know. In my opinion, a dysfunctional household setting is the last thing a child needs to be prosperous and to fulfill their potential academically, mentally, and spiritually. Frederick really did a dang good job at revealing these matters in his book. It's sad to think that basically he is REVEALING this to people but its extremely true. GOD bless this brotha for being so real and letting the truth come out and hopefully through reading this book the truth will set our black communities free as well.
Do As I Say Not As I Do introduces the reader to January Calhoun III. January is an intelligent, athletic and lonely young man. He does not know his mother. His father (Daddy C) is addicted to crack. January's oasis is running and hiding in the backseat of a 1968 Chevy Impala. He writes letters to the Chevy Impala, which expresses his emotions. His environment has taken hold of him and he writes to the Chevy Impala as if it were a close friend. Everything January does is to survive or for his financial future.

This novel is eye opening and also gives the reader a better understanding of how some neighborhoods live. Even though the characters are flawed the reader is shown the intelligence of many of the characters. I recommend this novel and look forward to future novels written by Frederick James Preston.

DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO is a profound look at the clutches an environment can place around people who do not know love, only loneliness; who see no way out and believe they are invincible. January's thought process is to do what he needs to survive and carve out a financial future. January records his thoughts, hopes, desires, and fears in letters written to a 1968 Chevy Impala, his best friend. I found this tactic different and interesting. He does this inside of the Chevy while escaping from the realities of his life. Realities brought on by adults and later by him.

Frederick James Preston has written a riveting and captivating tale full of realism and has also done a great job illustrating the confusion and pain of January Calhoun III. Though a gifted young man, January is gripped by an environment that the reader hopes he will be able to escape. There is violence, drug abuse, sexual escapades, scandals and other surprises that make this book an exciting read.

As a teacher for boys and girls in juvenile reform centers, Mr. Preston has brought to print what more than 60 percent of my kids have suffered. This book is great for high school students and all teachers should take the time to read it and place it in their school libraries.

"Sometimes good people do bad things. A t some point , and to different degrees, we all succumb to our environment" (Frederick Preston)
